Design Experience
Mary K. Mitsinikos, Registered Architect, owner of MKM Architects, is an accomplished designer with over 25 years of experience in the practice of architecture with the last 16 years focusing exclusively on residential architecture. After graduating with a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Kent State University, she began working with notable architectural firms in Princeton, Philadelphia and Boston. Prior to founding MKM Architects, Mary was an associate with the Boston firm Taylor & Partners, Inc., where she practiced architecture in the field of healthcare. With a wealth of knowledge gained from that working experience, Mary began practicing architecture on her own and has sustained a thriving business doing what she loves, designing spaces for people to live in.
Several years ago, using her own home as a “think tank”, she began exploring the many issues in residential design today. Her projects investigate concepts in spatial design and layout for our modern lifestyles as well as combining natural and artificial light into the design to further enhance the space. Her explorations investigate innovative ideas with traditional and present-day materials and finishes, environmentally responsible design concepts, and place emphasis on the functionality and aesthetic inside and outside the home. Her style is fresh and contemporary, filled with clean lines and bright spaces.
MKM Architects works throughout the New York metropolitan area and has experience in new residences as well as additions and alterations to existing homes. Other projects include pool houses, exterior façade renovations, small healthcare projects, light commercial construction and theater set design for local high schools and elementary schools.
Mary is a believer in “surrounding yourself with good people” and she has done just that with her firm. She consults with a group of talented and knowledgeable individuals that make up the team that together achieve her final work. Her team includes fellow architects, structural consultants, landscape and civil consultants, interior designers and a draftsperson. This consultant team approach allows Mary to not only keep her firm small, but for her to focus exclusively on the needs and desires of the client and ultimately the design of the project.
Mary holds a license to practice architecture in New Jersey. She is a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and is a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design- Accredited Professional (LEED-AP). Mary is an active member of the New Jersey Society of Architects and the local chapter of The Architects League of Northern New Jersey.
Mary volunteers her time as an engineering mentor with the New Jersey Region of the Future City Competition. Future City is a yearly national competition that brings together the education community, local engineering firms and various professional societies to solve relevant, citywide sustainability issues. A mentor is a local STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) professional that serves alongside educators, proving instruction, guidance and support to middle school students as they prepare for the competition held each January at Rutgers University.
